Stopping Impunity for Corruption through Enhanced Accountability

Objectives:

  1. CSOs in Africa document corruption more effectively and engage with relevant independent accountability mechanisms to deter corruption and reduce impunity for corrupt actors
  1. CSO collaboration and capacity strengthened to more effectively promote evidence-based advocacy to advance anti-corruption reforms in Africa

Districts: National level

Context

Fighting corruption constantly ranks among the top priorities of the political discourse across Sub-Saharan countries. Despite efforts by most governments on the continent, most Africans believe that their government are failing at tackling corruption.

One of the biggest threats to progress is grand corruption – systemic corruption involving high-level public officials and vast sums of money. And yet impunity has been the norm. Civil society actors continue to face challenges in utilizing international accountability mechanisms and effectively advocating for anti-corruption reforms to reduce impunity for corrupt actors.

Intervention

TI Zambia is one of the 11 TI Chapters in Africa that is implementing the SICEA project, aiming at strengthening advocacy skills and cementing national and regional advocacy efforts to advance anti-corruption reform more effectively.

SICEA’s approach is based on three pillars: legal capacity building, research, and regional advocacy. For more info, visit TI’s project webpage

Some of the main activities that TI Zambia will conduct within the framework of the project include:

  • Training on legal accountability mechanisms and evidentiary standards for CSOs.
  • Technical assistance for preparing and filing legal submissions for CSOs.
  • Grants for legal case work (for CSOs in Sub-Saharan Africa).
  • Collecting and compiling corruption cases in a database.
  • Documenting the implementation status of regional and international anti-corruption instruments with regards to access to information.
  • Producing policy briefing and communication materials calling on access to information and anti-corruption reform.
  • Advocacy training for CSOs.
  • Organizing advocacy events at regional and international governance/anti-corruption forums.
  • Facilitating advocacy learning exchanges among CSOs.
