Transparency International Zambia (TI-Z) today joins the rest of the world in commemorating World Whistleblower Day. In putting the spotlight on whistleblowers as individuals who embody the spirit of truth and accountability, we wish to acknowledge them as guardians of integrity, who shine a light on misconduct, corruption, and injustice that occurs in society. The courageous actions of whistleblowers serve as beacons of hope and challenge us to confront uncomfortable truths and work towards a more just and transparent world.
As we celebrate World Whistleblower Day, we recognize the immense sacrifices that whistleblowers in different contexts have continued to make. They often face immense personal and professional risks, including isolation, harassment, and retaliation. Despite these challenges, they remain undeterred, motivated by their unwavering belief in the power of truth to effect change. Their acts of disclosure not only expose wrongdoing but also inspire others to question the status quo and demand greater accountability. Whistleblowers are catalysts for progress, catalysts for the restoration of trust and integrity. Their disclosures have sparked investigations, triggered reforms, and initiated critical conversations that lead to systemic improvements. Their brave voices provide the impetus for change, reminding us of the urgent need to foster cultures that encourage ethical behavior, protect against corruption, and value transparency.
TI-Z, through our Active Citizenship strategic focus, has been working to address the root causes of corruption and support victims of corruption. Our focus is on promoting transparency, accountability, and integrity through community action, citizen activism, and reporting of service delivery malpractices. To enhance our efforts, we signed a comprehensive Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Alliance for Community Action (ACA) two months ago, and in line with that MoU, we have been working together with ACA to assist victims of corruption when in accessing justice. Additionally, we have been engaging in joint social media campaigns to raise awareness about whistleblowing and the protection of whistleblowers. These campaigns have paved the way for an increase in corruption cases reported to us, resulting in further action of either investigations or referrals to Law Enforcement Agencies.
TI-Z therefore reiterates the need to cultivate a society that recognizes the immense value whistleblowers bring to our communities. Their contributions must be acknowledged, celebrated, and rewarded. By doing so, we not only honour their bravery but also encourage others to step forward and speak out against injustice. As we commemorate World Whistleblower Day, let us commit ourselves to championing truth, upholding ethics, and standing in solidarity with those who risk everything to expose the truth. Together, we can build a world where whistleblowers are embraced as heroes, and their actions lead to a more accountable, just, and transparent society for all.
