TI-Z statement in commemoration of Zambia’s 59th Independence Day

Transparency International Zambia (TI-Z) joins the rest of the country in celebrating Zambia’s 59th Independence anniversary. For us, this day is not just a commemoration of the historical struggle for self-determination, but a vivid reminder of our continued commitment as a country to achieving true democracy and good governance, premised on a relentless fight against corruption.
This year’s Independence Day is yet another opportunity for us as a country to reflect on the progress we have made in different aspects over the last 59 years, and to reinvigorate our resolve to uphold the principles that underpin a just and prosperous society that gives equal opportunities to all its citizens. As TI-Z, we firmly believe that an unwavering resolve to fight the scourge of corruption in real and meaningful ways is a prerequisite to a thriving democracy and to the attainment of a truly free and prosperous Zambia. Corruption is a scourge that undermines the foundations of our nation, erodes public trust, weakens our institutions, perpetuates inequality, and stifles economic growth. It is a force that places limitations on our potential and our opportunities, and that hinders the realization of the dreams and aspirations of our people.
Thus, fighting corruption should not merely be an ideal, but rather a pragmatic and strategic imperative that will allow Zambia to break free from the shackles of the devastating impacts of this scourge. Thus, as we commemorate this year’s Independence Day, we call on the government and the ruling party to remain alive to Zambia’s long-held resolve to creating a society that fosters a level playing field for all citizens, regardless of their background, socio-economic status, religious, or political affiliations. This resolve
also includes a commitment to ensure that public resources are allocated and utilized for the benefit of all citizens, rather than being siphoned off by a select few through acts of corruption at different levels. These are the ideas that drove our forefathers in their struggle for political independence all those years ago, and we implore the current generation of leaders, whether in government or not, to remain true to those aspirations in order to enable Zambia to continue its efforts towards achieving economic independence.
Thus, as we look back on the last 59 years and look forward to the future, let us remember that each and every one of us has a role to play in building a Zambia that is free from corruption and that continues to espouse the values of transparency, integrity and accountability in all sectors. As TI-Z, we remain committed to supporting these efforts and will continue to collaborate with different stakeholders to advance these ideals. We call on the gallant people of Zambia, who have achieved so much over the last 59 years, to join us in this endeavor, for it is only through unity of purpose that we will achieve our aspirations as a country.
On this Independence Day, let us celebrate not only the past struggles and triumphs but also the future we envision. A future where our democracy thrives, our governance is beyond reproach, and our nation is free from the shackles of corruption. Together, we can make this vision a reality.
Happy Independence Day, Zambia!
