Transparency International Zambia (TI-Z) on the 1st and 2nd of December 2021, hosted the 3rd Zambia Anti -corruption Conference, following the second conference held in December 2021. The 3rd Zambia Anti-Corruption Conference which brought together key stakeholders from relevant Government Institutions, Civil Society Organizations, Youth and Women Activists, Journalists, Academia and Multilateral Agencies who discussed Zambia’s challenges in the fight against corruption and proposed strategies for steering the fight against corruption towards public procurement.
The Conference also raised public awareness regarding the existence, causes and the threat posed by corruption as it relates to the public procurement system in Zambia. There is overwhelming evidence, that over the past decade, corruption has gravitated towards public procurement. The majority of cases investigated by the Anti-Corruption Commission are procurement related while the Auditor General and Financial Intelligence Centre reports have continued to indicate that public procurement corruption is on the rise.
Arising from this conference, anchored on the theme titled “Steering the Fight against Corruption towards Public Procurement”, we, the anti-corruption stakeholders, on 2nd December 2022, make the following commitments against corruption for the year 2023:
- We recognize that fighting public procurement corruption demand a multi-stakeholder and multisectorial approach. This includes deliberate efforts to bring the private sector in the fight against corruption. We will therefore create multi stakeholder platforms to improve collaborative action in the fight against corruption in general and public procurement in particular.
- As a way of fighting Public Procurement Corruption, we will heighten our efforts to advocate for strengthened and enhanced oversight of all procurement stages in the procurement process.
